X Research source If you choose to use any chemicals, complete a final rinse to remove remaining materials because residual chemicals can be damaging to your painting process. Keeping the surface of the vinyl clean won’t prevent it from oxidizing, but it will prevent corrosive chemicals in the air from attacking the surface, slowing the process of deterioration. I sprayed on the detergent over the entire wall of the house, working from the top downward, and allowed the chemicals to agitate the surface for a few minutes, per the Krud Kutter instructions. In this case, you can only use latex-based paint, not oil-based which should be used over aluminum. If the siding has previous layers of paint, you will need to scrape them off first. If you want to see a good case of chalked (oxidized) paint, look closely at a 20-year-old home sided with aluminum that’s never been cleaned or painted. 3. Now take a look at the siding again.
Paint the siding. Paint in long, even strokes, making sure not to overdo it. This will help ensure that the paint adheres better to the siding and that it won’t peel or have other issues in the future. Simply choose a detergent containing TSP (trisodium phosphate) to remove the chalking. First, I washed down each wall with a garden hose to remove the loose dust, and then filled the detergent tank with Krud Kutter Pressure Washer Concentrate specified for house siding. Pressure wash once or twice a year, making sure to fill the plastic dip tube on the pressure washer with laundry detergent. Use a pressure washer with laundry detergent to get the surface sparkling clean. This stuff seemed to cover every square inch of siding and made for a lousy painting surface.
When washing metal siding, it’s best to get the nozzle as close to the siding as possible, which makes the most use of the powerful water stream. Sheets of chalky water streamed off the house like dirty milk. Although a power washer is the easiest option to remove dirt from siding, water can get behind the siding. The surface of vinyl siding etches in time. As the surface deteriorates, the pitting causes the material to become dull and prone to stain. On any sort of painting project, surface preparation is absolutely critical for any hope of success. Painting should help. Hooray!
